Residents say that the children's school clothes and school books were destroyed in the blaze

Three shacks were destroyed by fire earlier today (28 August) in Marula Drive, Smartiesville.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

Residents say the children were bathing at the time, and they suddenly saw flames leaping up from the roof.

The Ladysmith Fire Department and Public Safety officers responded to the scene and doused the flames.

The fire was put out in about 20 minutes, and the cooling process took another 40 minutes.
