Wasbank learners recover after falling ill from snacks near school
Thirteen learners recovered after receiving treatment when they became ill after eating snacks bought near school.
Thirteen learners from Hlonipha Primary School in Wasbank have been discharged from hospital after falling ill shortly after eating food purchased from a shop near the school.
The learners were taken to Dundee Hospital on Thursday after reportedly becoming sick and vomiting following the consumption of red potato chips and polony.
Mayor visits school after food scare
uMzinyathi District Mayor Cllr Thembisile Mchunu visited the school following the incident.
School principal Mr Ndlovu said the learners began vomiting a red substance and crying during the afternoon.
Emergency services, assisted by Cllr Mthethwa, transported the learners to Dundee Hospital for treatment.
All 13 learners were later discharged and are expected to return to school on Monday.
Mayor Mchunu urged parents to provide food for their children where possible and encouraged them to remain vigilant when purchasing snacks and sweets.
He also confirmed that food safety officials would inspect shops in the area as part of the investigation into the incident.
The mayor thanked the school’s staff, emergency personnel and local councillors for their swift response in ensuring the learners received medical attention.
