MUST READ: Good Samaritan returns handbag

While at work on Friday, August 25, Mazibuko noticed a handbag lying under one of the tables in the establishment.

The cinematic world often depicts heroes as caped crusaders, capable of extraordinary feats of strength. Yet in reality, sometimes heroes hide in plain sight and their power can be seen through a simple act of honesty and kindness.

Dudu Mazibuko is one such heroine, working behind the counter of Chicken Licken at Newcastle Mall.

While at work on Friday, August 25, Mazibuko noticed a handbag lying under one of the tables in the establishment.

“Not were we only busy on the day, but the mall was packed. When I noticed the bag, I immediately picked it up and put it out of sight before anyone could steal it.”

Mazibuko then tried to find the handbag owner’s contact details, but to no avail.

“When I couldn’t find details in the bag, I was a bit concerned as there were a lot of important items in the bag. I became even more worried when she did not come later that day, thinking she might have been from out of town.”

However, unbeknown to Mazibuko, the handbag’s owner’s daughter, Rashmin Shampersad, took to social media and requested that anyone who had seen the handbag should contact her family, so it could be returned to her mother.

Luck played in their favour, however, and they returned to Chicken Licken on Sunday, August 27, in search of the bag, where Mazibuko returned it with all the relevant items and documentation still intact to Premilla Shampersad.

Shampersad thanked Mazibuko from the bottom of her heart, claiming she did not sleep at all after her bag went missing, as both her grant card and driver’s license were in it.

Shampersad said what made the return of the bag more special, was that Mazibuko refused a reward for her honesty and diligence.

“I was happy that I was able to return everything safely, as I believe that honesty is important. If I could give one bit of advice to others, if you find something, do your utmost to return it to the rightful owner,” concluded Mazibuko.
