READ NOW: Electricity supply under no jeopardy – Municipality

Power outages are no cause for concern.
The municipality has given a response to multiple power outages at the beginning of August, stating the electricity network is under control.
It has emphatically denied power supply is under jeopardy.
According to an official response, the root cause of the outages was a fault initiated by Eskom after system protection updates in 2016.
“The municipality did not do any upgrade to match the system protection of the network. The fault propagated through the municipality system [and] destroyed some of the equipment.”
Although power was restored according to its expectation, the municipality now has to upgrade protection and direct current (DC) systems at the Signal Hill Substation.
This is anticipated to balance out Eskom’s upgrades.
The Electricity Department is reportedly trying hard to minimise outage duration, but the municipality could only warn and alert residents about planned maintenance.
“The electricity business is a national security issue and communication to the media is guided by the National Regulation Standard,” the response concluded.
