Groom dies of suspected smoke inhalation

The owner kicked open the door to drag out the groom

A groom died of suspected smoke inhalation after a fire started in his room on a plot in Craigieburn late on Friday night.

Residents who contacted the Courier said the groom had fed the horses on the plot and gone to his room.

However, it is thought he had left a hot plate or some other heating device burning.  A fire started and other workers alerted the owner, Guy Slater.

Mr Slater immediately went to the scene.  By that time the room was ablaze.  Mr Slater kicked open the door and managed to drag out his groom.  Paramedics rushed to the scene but the groom, who will be named once his next of kin have been informed, tragically passed on.

More details when these become available.
