Umtshezi Midlands Ensemble does it again
The choir received a trophy plus R10 000 for their first place and R8 000 plus a trophy for second place

In our last article we reported that Umtshezi Midlands Ensemble is going to Pietermaritzburg for a Choral Music Competition hosted by KZN Department of Arts and Culture.
The competition was held over the weekend at the Winston Churchill Theatre in Pietermaritzburg. This year’s competition was to celebrate the life of OR Tambo through music.

Choirs were required to compose a song about the life and times of OR Tambo, under the Istibili category. The competition took place over two days, August 26 and 27.
There were five categories i.e. development, intermediate, Istibili, Soli and small ensemble and advance section. Umtshezi Midlands Ensemble competed against 12 choirs in the intermediate section, singing two songs, a Western and African prescribed music.
The choir surprised many and was placed first for the African song and was awarded second position for the Western song. The choir received a trophy plus R10 000 for their first place and R8 000 plus a trophy for second place.

Choral music lovers, you reminded of the concert to take place on September 23 in Ladysmith at the Area J Hall in Steadville. It is hosted by Umtshezi Midlands Ensemble with guest choirs, SA Singers from Durban and Mayibuye i-Africa from Pietermaritzburg.
