Support the Blood Bank on October 1

The SANBS will be at the Dundee Boulevard Centre when the Sathya Sai will hold a blood bank on October 1 from 10am to 3pm

While the Western Cape battles a severe, prolonged drought, KwaZulu-Natal is currently facing scarcity of a different kind – a critical lack of blood.

The blood supply in South Africa’s second-most populous province is at just 1.8 days of Group O stock, according to the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

The blood service is calling on donors and residents in the province to come forward to donate blood urgently, to stop cancer sufferers, people in life-threatening situations and anyone else who needs or relies on blood transfusions in KwaZulu-Natal, being at risk.

Endumeni residents did their bit last Monday when they supported a blood bank at the St James Anglican Church in Dundee. Forty-two units of blood were collected, which equates to 126 lives saved. However, despite the good turnout, things are still bleak around the province.

“The bloodstock in KZN is dangerously low. The blood supply is currently at just 1.8 days Group O stock, amounting to less than 200 units of O blood available around the province,” says Silungile Mlambo, national marketing manager for the SANBS.

The SANBS is urgently appealing to residents of KwaZulu-Natal to step forward and donate blood immediately.

The SANBS will be in Dundee again, so if you missed out on the last blood bank, you can still do your bit.

The SANBS will be at the Dundee Boulevard Centre when the Sathya Sai will hold a blood bank on October 1 from 10am to 3pm.
