Sheep thieves hoof it as ‘the Watch’ closes in

Most people spent Sunday celebrating Heritage Day, others spent the day stealing sheep from the farm of Louis van Rooyen.

MOST people spent Sunday celebrating Heritage Day, others spent the day stealing sheep from the farm of Louis van Rooyen near the Triangle Store approximately 11km outside Vryheid.

Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch received a call from a concerned citizen who had been contacted by someone near the farm who had noticed the livestock theft in progress.

Despite the distance, Neighbourhood Watch members, who were available at the time, responded within minutes, curtailing the theft and recovering the 38 sheep that were stolen.

“Unfortunately, the suspects got away,” stated Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch Patrol Coordinator, Imtiaz Sahib, who was also at the scene. “The sheep were recovered near the river bed. I believe that if they had another thirty minutes or so to carry out the theft, the sheep would not have been recovered.”
