MUST READ: Red Cross calls for its assistance

The clothing collected by the Red Cross went to people who had lost their homes in disasters such as fires and floods. It also assisted those in severe financial difficulty with clothing.

In times of disaster, the South African Red Cross Society would provide relief services to the distraught. But who will help Red Cross in its time of need?

According to Red Cross Project Coordinator, Annemarie Scheepers, the Red Cross Newcastle branch desperately required clothing donations.

The clothing collected by the Red Cross went to people who had lost their homes in disasters such as fires and floods. It also assisted those in severe financial difficulty with clothing.

Without the necessary clothing stock, Scheepers said scores of underprivileged people would be affected.

“Our branch covers Newcastle, Perdekop, Memel, Nqutu, Paulpietersburg and Bergville.”

Projects Officer, Nelly Ndwandwe, explained the distribution of clothing to those in need was simply but only one important facet of the organisation’s work.

“We also assist with sick care, teaching life skills in and out of school, and focusing on vulnerable children,” Ndwandwe explained.

It was because of these vulnerable children, that the organisation would need to ensure its clothing stocks were not depleted.

“It is horrible going to a family, who have lost everything and only being able to give one pair of pants and a top,” Scheepers said.

The organisation requested donations of baby and children clothing, as well as any adult clothing in all sizes.
