PREVIEW: The face behind Newcastle’s controversial crime ranking
Behind Newcastle's alleged third-worst crime ranking is a blogger named Gustav TK, who lists his place of residence as Ghana.
October was not a good month for Newcastle’s crime reputation.
Last month, our city was named on ‘Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in South Africa’.
Newcastle was said to be third worst in terms of crime ranking.
This article was published by online site, SA Diaries.
The Newcastle Advertiser quickly determined the data referenced in the report had some major flaws.
Most notably, the data used was not from a verified source.
In response, SA Diaries was equally quick to amend its article.
Since then, the Advertiser has dug deeper into this website and its creator.
With this, journalists have uncovered a connection beyond South Africa’s borders.
At the heart of this is a man known as Gustav TK.
To learn more on this investigation, read this week’s of the Newcastle Advertiser.
The full report on Newcastle’s ‘crime ranking’ is in the latest edition, on shelves from Thursday.
