MUST READ: How safe are shoppers’ vehicles?

Newcastle Mall Management stated it is currently taking proactive steps to secure the safety of shoppers and their motor vehicles.

How safe is your vehicle in a parking lot?

Social media was abuzz after a motor vehicle was stolen from the Newcastle Mall parking lot on Sunday, November 12.

An irate woman explained how her parents had gone to the mall on Sunday afternoon, only to have their Volkswagen Fox stolen shortly after 1pm.

“My parents are from Wasbank and were visiting family for the weekend.”

With their weekend coming to a upsetting end, the woman said her parents were not satisfied with answers given by security.

“The security gave my parents attitude, saying they could not help. It was only after my mother questioned how a big mall could not have video footage, did they reluctantly help.”

The couple were allowed to view the camera footage, which showed their car leaving the mall’s property at 1.24pm.

Newcastle Mall Management stated it is currently taking proactive steps to secure the safety of shoppers and their motor vehicles.

“All security related incidents are thoroughly investigated and as conveyed previously to the media, there is a continuous focus on introducing additional security measures, such as the boom gates,” Newcastle Mall’s Management team said.

Despite Newcastillians voicing their dismay at the lack of security via social media, Newcastle Mall Management had taken the necessary precautionary steps.

“Some time ago, and prior to any recent incident or related social media commentary, the landlord took a decision to upgrade the mall’s security systems. We as Newcastle Mall Management take note of the commentary expressed on social media, and thank the community for their concern.”

One of the initial upgrades was PTZ cameras at each entrance overlooking the parking area, and had already been installed.

“In addition, orders for the upgrade and operations of the boom gate system at each main entrance to the parking area had already been issued, and the equipment is on order. We will do our best for the boom gates to become operational within the next few weeks,” explained Centre Manager, Hester Malan.

Number plate recognition cameras and accompanying software had already been approved, and a works order for the same has already been issued; this and the equipment are already on order.

“Additional security measures will also be installed, which for obvious reasons is to remain confidential,” said Malan.

Newcastle Mall has launched an investigation into the car thefts.

“We are running our own investigation, and we are also working closely with the SAPS and crime/security companies in this regard, and assist with their investigation/s where we can.”

Malan said crimes of this type were unfortunately opportunistic by nature.

“We call on all customers to please report any irregular or suspicious behaviour immediately to Centre Management Control Room on 034 326 1120.”

Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube said car theft had become a problem in recent months, especially in all mall parking lots.
