Newcastle bowlers compete in thrilling drawn pairs final
Newcastle Bowling Club hosted a successful drawn pairs competition, with Robbie Niemann and Cobus Lamprecht taking the title.
32 keen bowlers took to the Newcastle greens last weekend to compete in the club’s Drawn Pairs Competition.
The teams were divided into four sections, with each side playing three games to determine the section winners.
The successful pairs who advanced to the semi-finals were Ron Howe and Shaun Teasdale, Robbie Niemann and Cobus Lamprecht, Koen Pretorius and Pieter de Bruyn, and Billy Villiers and Yunus Kader.
Closely contested semi-finals
Both semi-final matches produced excellent bowls, with the results only decided on the final end.
Ron Howe and Shaun Teasdale started strongly against Robbie Niemann and Cobus Lamprecht, building a 10-4 lead. However, Robbie and Cobus fought back, scoring 10 shots over the next six ends to take a four-shot lead heading into the final end. Ron and Shaun managed to score a single shot on the last end but narrowly lost to their determined opponents.
The second semi-final was equally competitive. Koen Pretorius and Pieter de Bruyn took an early lead before Billy Villiers and Yunus Kader staged a comeback to move within one shot. A tense battle followed, with Billy and Yunus leading 11-10 with two ends remaining. Koen and Pieter responded with a three and a one on the final two ends to secure a place in the final.
Final sees Robbie and Cobus claim victory
The final between the two winning pairs was another exciting contest.
Koen Pretorius and Pieter de Bruyn made a strong start, taking a 9-4 lead, before Robbie Niemann and Cobus Lamprecht fought back to level the match at 11-11 after the 11th end. By the 14th end, Robbie and Cobus had moved ahead 14-12. Koen and Pieter scored a single on the final end but narrowly missed out, with Robbie and Cobus taking the title.
Congratulations go to all the players who participated, with special recognition for the club’s newer bowlers who continue to make their mark.
The Round Table Charity Bowls Day will take place this Saturday (July 4), with the community once again coming together to support a worthy cause.
