Dundee confirmed as the home of champion meat
Andrew Adams of the Dundee and District Farmers Union said the champion carcass auction attracted great interest with the two bidders 'eventually pushing each other to the brink to get the best steaks in town'.
The Dundee area has always prided itself on being the ‘meat market of KZN’ and the quality on show at the recent Dundee Quality Slaughter stock show again enhanced this deserved reputation.
The show was held on September 28 where the Dundee Champion Carcass was also auctioned off.
Andrew Adams of the Dundee and District Farmers Union said the champion carcass auction attracted great interest with the two bidders ‘eventually pushing each other to the brink to get the best steaks in town’.
“Ingudlane lodge locked horns with OK Bazaars and Battle Creek Spur in a bidding frenzy to ensure they take home the champion for their clientele. Ingudlane eventually won, paying a staggering R52/kg or R13 600. The average price of the day was R44/kg,” said Mr Adams.
He added that the Dundee Champion Carcass was a black Brangus/Drakensberger cross animal. “Its fat coverage was perfectly spread. If the conformation (Conformation in cattle is one of the utmost important qualities that a cattle producer must know about and understand when raising a good, solid breeding herd of cattle) had been slightly higher, it would have been the 2017 South African Champion. The animal was bred by Walter Buhr of Dreykon Farming. It was fed on Feedteks Beefgainer 110 feed. Not only did Walter breed the champion carcass, but he also bred the reserve champion group of four carcasses as well as the champion lamb and numerous other prize-winning animals on show.”

“Quality from pasture to plate”
Dreykon Farming is in partnership with Ingudlane Lodge. Most of the beef from Dreykon Farming eventually ends up in the Ingudlane Lodge restaurant.
Owners, Marc and Leon Klusner with Walter, pay particular attention to the high quality of farming in Dreykon Farming to eventually ensure that that same quality is passed through to the patrons in the restaurant. They stand by the motto of “Quality from pasture to plate”.
Ingudlane Lodge and Restaurant include a game reserve and up the perfectly manicured road sets the mood for an extremely peaceful and relaxing experience. Cameron Fraser is the resident Game Ranger and would love to take people on a game drive to view the myriad of game species on the farm.
Riaan Breedt, the restaurant and lodge manager, and his friendly staff pay special attention to all their patrons.
The reserve champion carcass was snapped up by OK Bazaars and Battle Creek Spur to ensure that their patrons continue to get the high quality.
“The reserve champion was bred and exhibited by LJ and Jacqui Marais. They also won the award for the SAMIC best group of four carcasses and the Champion of the yard. Dr Andy Hensin and Anton Ferreira expertly fed these animals at Triple C feedlot.
Therefore the Battle Creek Spur, once again, has championship steaks in stock waiting for your next visit. You won’t be disappointed.
