VIDEO: Today’s by-election will determine who will fill Cllr Mtshali’s shoes in Mondlo

The by-election in ward 18 in Mondlo took place today, and the voters made their way to one of three voting stations to cast their votes amid a sea of political paraphernalia.

Former IFP mayor and AbaQulusi ward councillor, Cllr Martin Mtshali’s passing left a vacancy in ward 18, a hole in the hearts of the ward constituents and cast the future of the council into uncertainty.

The by-election in ward 18 in Mondlo took place today, and the voters made their way to one of three voting stations to cast their votes amid a sea of political paraphernalia.

The results of this by-election will decide the future of the AbaQulusi municipality.

Should the IFP win, the party will retain control of the council together with DA and EFF, which the part y has a working relationship with.

Should the ANC win, AbaQulusi will face a hung council.

An NFP candidate and an EFF candidate are also contesting the ward.

Forsyth Zungu is hoping his vote will lead to electricity availability, better roads maintenance and solutions to unemployment.
Mandla Vilakazi would like to see a change in quality of education and a reduction in unemployment. He said that there are not enough job opportunities available for the youth in Mondlo and he hopes his vote will lead to the creation of more jobs.
Patrick Mntambo agreed that more jobs are needed for the unemployed youth. Patrick is a subsistence farmer who has always longed to try his hand at commercial farming and would like the municipality to assist him and others in the same predicament with tools and seeds. He said that the establishment of tertiary institutions in the area is important for skills development and hopes his vote will also lead to modern sewerage systems in his area, and better road maintenance.
David Nkabinde is hoping his vote will lead to the economic development of Mondlo. He feels that the municipality has a responsibility to do something about the unemployed youth, and to award tenders locally in order to support local economic development.
