Millions of litres of clean, fresh water are going to waste and no one is doing anything about it.These are the sentiments of residents living at Hillside in Gilby Road.
For the past four months, residents have been watching as the overflow from a nearby reservoir flows into an adjacent open field and into the property at Hillside.

A resident from the flat says that she has been attempting for months to get Uthukela District Municipality to repair the source of the water flow and repair it.
What angers the residents more is that while some towns, like Cape Town and Ladysmith, are placed on strict water restrictions, millions of litres of water are being wasted in Estcourt.

“If only we could send some of this water to Cape Town,” said the resident in a sad tone. “It is not only about the damage that is being caused to the property at Hillside, which includes water seeping into the foundation and gardens, it is about the huge waste of water,” she added.
Residents noted that the water flow peaks during the weekend. Uthukela District Municipality has been alerted of this concern and asked about steps to remedy the situation, a response was not received at the time of going to print.
