All clear at Rorke’s Drift – for now
The community has given a deadline of a month for construction to begin to bring electricity to the area

The roads at Rorke’s Drift are again passable after a week of protests that saw logs and rocks blocking access to the area and trenches dug in the roads.
At a meeting yesterday between community leaders, Msinga Municipality and the SAPS, it was agreed that the roads would be cleared.
However, community leaders gave a deadline of a month to see work starting on electrifying the area.
The protest started last week after the community said a promise to bring electricity into their area never materialised.
The Isandlwana area, across the Buffalo River which falls under Nquthu municipality, has electricity but not the Rorke’s Drift area.
The protest put Rorke’s Drift under a virtual siege with tourists under lock down in lodges. At one stage police were called in to escort tourists to safety.
Road signs were damaged and at least two vehicles stoned. Various events in the area, including a peace walk, a commemorative football match to honour those who fell during the 1879 battle of Rorke’s Drift and the annual Moth Parade, were all cancelled.
The museum and schools were also closed while the roads were blocked.
