KZN makes breakthrough against drug smugglers

We must commend the police on a job well done. Drug traffickers now know that South Africa is not a safe haven for their activities, they will be arrested whether they bring drugs into our country by air or road.”

The MEC for Social Development Mrs Weziwe Thusi has applauded police who have dealt a serious blow to the drug trade in KwaZulu-Natal over the past 48 hours.

A 50-year-old man is expected to appear in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on charges of drug trafficking. The man was arrested at the Golela Border Post on Wednesday night while trying to smuggle 200kg of cocaine powder from Mozambique via Swaziland into KwaZulu-Natal. The man was arrested in a joint operation between the Hawks and border police.

In the second operation, police raided the “Bloods” gang in Phoenix, north of Durban and seized drugs including heroin, mandrax, cocaine, rock cocaine, dagga and magic mushroom. They also seized a number of firearms and cash during the raid. Several gang members were arrested.

MEC Thusi said, “This is a very good start to the New Year, we hope these raids will continue because they send a message to drug dealers that it’s not business as usual and that the police will catch them no matter how they try to bring drugs into our country.”

She added, “We must commend the police on a job well done. Drug traffickers now know that South Africa is not a safe haven for their activities, they will be arrested whether they bring drugs into our country by air or road.”

MEC Thusi has called on members of the public to be the eyes and ears of the police and report drug activity in their communities, “We have seen the damage caused by drugs to families and communities, keeping quiet and hiding drug dealers is no longer a consideration, they must be reported and arrested. Members of the public can also report drug activity to local drug action committee because we know that in some communities people are afraid to go directly to the police.”
