Dundee/Greytown road open after police clear protest
"We are being discriminated against as houses have only been built in Sibongile'
The Dundee/Greytown road, near the turn-off to Forestdale, is open again after protesters blocked the road with burning branches earlier this morning.
The Watt Road access to the area and the road near the Sithole Farm area on the Greytown area and the road near Dlamini Village were also blocked.
The protesters, mainly from Forestdale, said they were angered by what they said were ‘broken promises over the building of houses in Fortestdale’.
The Courier was at a public meeting on January 13 in Forestdale where it was said that they would block the main access to Dundee unless the Municipality meets their demands.
“We have been waiting since 2007. Only houses have been built in Sibongile. Nothing for us. Mascon Construction has laid out the land for development now we are told there is no money for houses… we are being discriminated against,” one angry man told the Courier at the protest.
Traffic built up and the POP Unit from Newcastle was called in to use deploy stun grenades to clear the crowd. The burning branches were removed and traffic let through. However, those in the protest said ‘there is still more to come’.
