Pothole repairs in President Street – It’s not a permanent fix, but it’s something for now, isn’t it?

THE Vryheid Herald Facebook and Instagram pages saw mixed reactions from the community last Thursday with regard to the filling and patching of potholes along the treacherous stretch of pock-marked asphalt known as President Street.
While some were grateful for the municipality’s efforts to render this pothole-plagued road somewhat more motorist-friendly by even the simplest means, others called into question the long-term effectiveness and adequacy of such a ‘temporary’ fix.
Elvis Mpanza writes, “We are grateful for the little they’re doing given harsh economic hardships globally.”
AbaQulusi Mayor, Jerry Sibiya, in response, has confirmed that that it is precisely what it is… a temporary fix. Plans are, however, being put into place to facilitate a lasting solution and a proposal has been put forward for next year’s budget to accommodate the eventual resurfacing of the road.
A municipal worker, who preferred to remain anonymous, due to the fact that he felt he was merely doing his job and did not deserve any praise for it, informed us that the temporary patching of the potholes and the efficacy thereof is usually dependent on weather conditions and that, while some of the patches did not last, this was largely due to the patch not having enough time to bond with the surface of the road before being dislodged by wet weather.

The point is, it is not a permanent solution. It is however, a temporary relief to motorists who utilise this road on a regular basis and the team of workers are committed to the completion of the task taking place as soon as possible. The potholes are likely to return eventually but, when they do, the team will return and fill them again until the resurfacing can be done.
“If you see any potholes, please report them to the municipality and we will do our best to attend to them as soon as we possibly can,” he added with an enthusiastic smile.
Vryheid Herald reader, Lezaan Kemp, added, “Nie om snaaks te wees nie, maar as hulle daai pad moet toemaak om oor te doen, gaan daar daaroor ook gekla word…” which could very well be a valid point.
