A 36-year-old man was sentenced to life behind bars by the Newcastle Regional Court on February 5, for raping his 13-year-old daughter in 2015.
Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube said the victim was invited by her father to accompany him to town, as he had promised to buy her a cellphone.

“However, the accused did not have his ID book with him and could therefore not purchase the cellphone, but proceeded to buy her a pair of shoes instead.”
After purchasing the shoes, the accused then bought some alcohol and proceeded to consume it while sitting under a tree.
According to the victims recount of what had happened, she said her father tried to kiss her, but she rejected him.
“Following this, he then threatened to assault her while forcing her to undress, before raping her.”
The victim then alleged her father threatened to hurt her if she reported the incident to anyone.
Afraid of what her father might do to her, the victim went home and kept quiet about the incident.
The next day, however, she decided to report the rape to a school teacher, who then reported it to the police.
“The matter was soon referred to the Newcastle FCS unit, and the girls father was arrested.”
The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa commended detectives for their thorough investigation that led to the conviction of the accused.
