Colleagues come together for clean up at the cemetery

IT’S no secret that Vryheid Cemetery has seen better days, but community involvement could breathe new life into the grave state of the cemetery.
While many complain about the sad state of affairs and wait for the municipality to take action, there are those noble few who step up and take action themselves. The crew from Vryheid Cash and Carry are one such noble bunch who, even in a time of personal crisis, banded together to make things better.
When one of their managers suffered the loss of a family member recently, his colleagues dedicated their Saturday afternoon to ensuring that James Williams’ uncle, Michael Williams, could be laid to rest in an acceptable manner by taking up implements to ensure the cleanliness of the Williams family plot at the cemetery.

In the space of about two to three hours, the team managed to clean up approximately 375 square metres of ground, working together to clean the graves and the area surrounding James’ uncle’s final resting place.
“My family and I would sincerely like to thank all the staff at Cash and Carry for their help in cleaning the graveyard,” said James Williams, whose uncle was laid to rest on Monday. “We’d also like to thank them for their support through this difficult time. It really means a lot to us.”
AbaQulusi Mayor, Jerry Sibiya, when hearing of this project, also expressed his appreciation.
“As a community, we need to work together,” he smiled. “With more inspiring acts like this from community members willing to stand up and assist us, as the municipality, by doing even just a little bit to improve the town, we can go a long way… Every bit helps.”
