This is what you need to know for booking and passing your Learner’s licence

All information will be given right here so you don't have to look any further!

For many getting a learner’s licence and later a driver’s is a step onto the path of freedom and a chance to be independent. But many do not understand the process.

All information will be given right here so you don’t have to look any further!

The first step is to go to the nearest driving licensing testing centre (DLTC) to book a test date and confirm the booking. Our nearest testing center is located at the Public safety offices in Murchison Street.

There you will need to state you are there to book a date for a learner’s licence, in which case you will be told to wait to have your eyes tested. However you may have an eye test performed by a qualified optometrist and submit that form at the testing centre.

After that you will be sent to respective counters to book and confirm your date of testing and time.  You will be required to pay the booking fee. The current cost of booking the test for your Learner’s Licence ranges from between R55 and R213 and you will need to produce a certified copy of your ID or Passport. It is suggested you take the original along with a certified copy.

Some centres may have a facility to certify copies of your ID while you are there but you should check this before you go.

You will also need to bring Proof of your ordinarily residing address and date of birth through any one of the following documents :

  • School Leaving Certificate.
  • Birth Certificate Ration Card.
  • Voter ID Card.
  • Passport.
  • Electricity Bill [Not older than 3 months]
  • Telephone Bill [Not older than 3 months]

Ensure you bring the following documents with:

  • an identity document (ID)
  • two identical black-and-white ID photographs (before you have photographs taken you should confirm with the DLTC how many photos they require.) Most photography businesses know the correct size but  state you want a learner’s licence photo
  • a booking fee(mentioned above)
  • Proof of postal and residential address e.g. utility account. If the utility bill is not in your name, the owner of the bill must make an affidavit declaring that you live at that address and the utility bill must be attached to the affidavit.
  • Ensure that you bring a completed  Application for Learner’s Licence form (LL1), which is available at the DLTC  (Driving Licence Testing Centre) or you may complete the form at the centre.
  • If you are 65 years or older, you must also complete a Medical certificate form (MC), which is also available at the DLTC.

As for requirements for passing, there are 3 sections: “Traffic Signs, Signals and Road Markings”, “Rules of the Road”, and “Controls for Vehicles”.

The first 2 sections have 30 questions each,  Controls for Vehicles has 8 questions. You need to pass each section on its own before you can pass the whole test – so if you pass 2 of the 3 sections, but fail 1 section , you will  fail the test. You need to pass all 3 sections.

The requirements for passing the test are as listed:

  • Traffic Signs, Signals and Road Markings: 23/30
  • Rules of the Road: 22/30
  • Controls for Vehicles: 6/8
The K53 Manual is the book to study and it gives some great, easy to understand explanations.
Finally on the day of your test, bring the booking receipt and your ID.
