Although remote jamming has not been in the limelight for very long time – it still surges on.

Business owner Jas Maniram was targeted last Monday while making a trip to a bank in the central business district (CBD).

“I pressed my remote and just walked into the bank. A while later, people ran into the bank shouting ‘they are stealing your bakkie’,” recalled Mr Maniram carefully.

Fortunately for Mr Maniram, uThukela District Municipality employees who know him well noticed a stranger and an accomplice gaining entry to his bakkie. The uThukela employees left their work across the road and immediately approached the men, who fled.

UThukela employees gave chase and caught one of the two men in Phillip Street. The bank staff contacted the police who apprehended the suspect and confiscated the remote jamming device. Mr Maniram would like to warn everyone after his close call, to ensure that your vehicle is locked.

“A big thank you to the vigilant and alert uThukela District Municipality and Nedbank staff for their assistance,” he added.

Police spokesperson Captain Charmaine Struwig would like to urge motorists to be vigilant and practice this advice:

• Before parking a vehicle look around for suspicious people or activity. If something does not feel right, then leave and park elsewhere.
• When locking your vehicle with a remote device don’t just walk away. First physically check whether all the locks have engaged and the doors are indeed securely locked.
• Do not leave valuables in your vehicle. This could attract unwanted attention.
• Before leaving the parking area resist the temptation to hurry away. Stand somewhere close and look around for people who may be watching your actions or showing suspicious interest in your vehicle.
