Concern escalates for mounting rubbish along roadside in Brewitt Road

"The occupants at 40 Brewitt Road are recycling illegally"

“Is our town rubbish dump?” This was one of the many questions asked by a concerned resident after a recent visit to Brewitt Road.

Making your way up Brewitt Road near the Estcourt Moth Club, one is met by an eyesore. Heaps of domestic waste gets piled and sorted out near the sidewalk. Nearby homeowners, and visitors of the historic Estcourt Moth Club have to deal with the sight and stench daily.

The homeowner is operating a waste collection and recycling company from the premises. The concerned resident would like to know what do municipal bylaws have to say about this. This matter has previously been reported to the municipality, yet nothing has been done.

“This is a residential area, is that not taken into consideration? Is our town a rubbish dump? Imagine all the pests infesting this area,” said the resident angrily.

The resident would also like for the image of the area to improve.

“This place needs urgent attention and something has to be done soon,” added the resident.

The resident who brought this to our attention fears the risk posed to the environment as well as human health.

The Estcourt News related these concerns to Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

“The occupants at 40 Brewitt Road are recycling illegally. The owner has been issued with a contravention notice. He has commenced removing waste material from his house and we have given him until March 23. Failure to comply will result in contravention fines been issued against the owner,” explained Communication Officer Zodwa Ngubeni.

The homeowner in question was also contacted for a comment.

Mr Matabadal said: “I am clearing the area, the problem is being resolved, at the moment, time is against us due to the bad weather conditions. We are in the process of acquiring premises to set up a recycling plant. This is our piece of bread, we are creating employment, it’s not just a dumpsite,” added Mr Matabadal.
