Residents have called the authorities to clean up the overgrown plot of land
Residents in the central business district have called on the authorities to take action against what they say are ‘anti-social elements’ taking refuge in a derelict building on Beaconsfield Street, across the road from Eventide.
One caller said his home on Smith Street had been burgled several times and is convinced the thieves go into hiding in the overgrown plot and in the ruins of what was once a proud family home.
On Sunday, Mbube Security guards were called upon to take action against several people who harrassed shoppers at the Shoprite Centre.
The men were said to be ‘very drunk and abusive and took to fighting with passers-by’ – their abuse increased when the guards tried to have them removed from the premises.

A warning shot was fired and the men handed over to the police. Some residents said the men also ‘hang out’ in the empty plot. It is not yet clear who owns the land.
