Update: Woman still traumatised and unwell after attack by card cloners

The 23-year-old woman who was attacked by card cloners on March 28 has been recovering at home after being released from ICU. Her health has improved, but she says she is still affected by the incident.

According to her mother, “She is doing fine, but she does not want to go out alone and is very nervous and alert when we do go out. She also has nightmares about the incident and says she will never draw money from an ATM again after this experience.”

The woman was thought to be diabetic, but her symptoms were those resulting from severe shock.

“She is not diabetic; it was just very severe shock caused by the incident that caused her sugar levels to drop so low,” her mother clarifies.

The 23-year-old still has trouble walking and is due to see a doctor in Umhlanga on April 26. The family is waiting for scans.

When the incident was in progress, the woman wanted to fight back, but there were children nearby that she feared would get hurt.

There were also people in the centre, who did not help her even though she screamed and shouted.

“That is what is the most heartbreaking part of this whole incident is that nobody there in the centre helped her before the men fled,” adds the victim’s mother.

“People helped her afterwards and the doctor said that if I had gotten her to the hospital any later, she would be in a worse condition.”

The woman’s family are very proud of her quick thinking during the ordeal in entering an incorrect PIN.

The family hopes this incident will help other people be more vigilant and if need be, take someone with them as added security when they withdraw money at ATMs.
