From July, Newcastle returns to a two-bag refuse disposal system.
Residents will be expected to sort their refuse into two distinct categories, or face the consequences.
From July 1, waste must be sorted into inorganic recyclable waste (clear bag) and food waste (black bag).

Residents and businesses who fail to do so will be fined a hefty R2 000.
“Within the next two months, we will undertake robust awareness campaigns in all areas, to educate residents on what goes into each refuse bag.”
Residents may still dispose of garden waste at the drop-off facility at the Show Grounds, as well as garden services and related companies.
This waste will be used by the municipality for composting.
“The Department of Waste Management also has other plans for the organic fraction of waste.”
