Family hopes for closure following intensive search
The search party included five dog units, SAPS Divers, the SAPS Equestrian Unit, a unit from the Durban Metro Police and local police officers.
The discovery of what appears to be a part of a child’s skull may finally offer some closure to the Khumalo and Steele families who lost three children during the January 25 storm.
Ayabonga Steele (9) was never found after he and his two siblings, Melokuhle Steele (11) and Kholeka Khumalo (5), were washed away when the Steenkoolspruit flooded near their little home in Lindelani on the night of the storm. 13-year-old Mally Steele (who survived) and the other three were washed downstream.

Melokhule was found about a kilometre downstream three days later and the body of Kholeka the day after – further downstream behind Vuleka Bush Camp on the Ngisane Road.

Despite an intensive search by family, volunteers and police – which included an aerial search – there was still no sign of Ayabonga. The constant flooding of streams in the area – which all eventually flow into the Buffalo River – made the search even more difficult.
Following appeals to the Provincial Government by the Patriotic Alliance for the police to do more following the successful search for Warrant Officer Jakes Juggan, his wife, Molly and friend, Ashoak Rajoo, a huge search and rescue team descended on Dundee on Thursday.
