Loskop police and NPOP Reserve Unit produce success

Loskop (Amangwe) police joined forces with the National Public Order Policing (NPOP) Reserve Unit to mark several successes last week.

The police unit, which was recently launched, accompanied Loskop police to homesteads that were identified to harbour illegal firearms and ammunition. Acting on information, the officers swooped on the targeted homes during the early hours of April 11.

“Homesteads that were identified were searched and four unlicensed pistols and as well as ammunition were recovered. A bucket full of dagga was also found in the area,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.

He added that a total of ten people were arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of dagga.

The suspects are aged between 20 and 46-years. They appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court on the same day.
This recovery and arrests marks another success for the NPOP Reserve Unit that also retrieved firearms in Loskop earlier this year.

“On March 29, the unit raided homesteads where they recovered four unlicensed firearms including a shotgun. They arrested four suspects who were found in possession of these firearms. The suspects appeared in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court facing charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” explained Lt Col Zwane.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner praised the members for the arrests as well as the recovery of illegal firearms.

“This Unit is a great asset and they add more value in the provinces attempts to stem the proliferation of illegal firearms. We are also confident that they will also add impetus in dealing with violent protests and other serious crimes in the province,” he said.
