What you should do if you are injured in a crash

When authorities arrive, wait for medical attention

When one is involved in a crash and injured, it can be a confusing and traumatising event.

Here is the procedure you should follow if you find yourself in this situation.

1. If you are involved in a motor vehicle crash and you are injured but still conscious, phone emergency services by dialing 112 or 10177 and give them your location utilising the blue route marker on national routes found every 200m. If you are not near a marker board, give the last known place of interest.

2. Ensure you do not move vehicles or injured individuals and wait for the authorities.

3. When authorities arrive, wait for medical attention. Do not make any unnecessary movements, as you may worsen your injuries.

4. If you are transported to hospital, ensure that you know which police station attended the crash and which breakdown company towed your vehicle.

5. Your possessions will be taken by the police to the station and when you are able to reclaim them, you will have to go to the station and sign for them.

6. At this time, you will also need to get an AR number (accident report) and if a case has been opened, you will need the CAS number.
