Newcastle Municipality mourns Dr Mahlaba
The former mayor will be remembered for his lifelong commitment to public service and community development.
The local municipality has joined the community of Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal and the nation as a whole in mourning the passing of former Newcastle mayor Dr Nthutuko Mahlaba, who was killed in a tragic accident on Saturday (July 4).
In a statement released by Newcastle Municipality, they said Dr Mahlaba would be remembered for his lifelong commitment to public service, community development and for leaving a lasting mark on the history of the municipality.
Municipality extends condolences
Town Mayor Xolani Dube, together with the Speaker of Council, members of the Executive Committee, the Municipal Manager, municipal officials and the wider Newcastle Municipality family extend their deepest condolences to the Mahlaba family, relatives, friends, former colleagues and everyone whose lives were touched by his leadership.
Paying tribute to the late former mayor, Dube said:
“On behalf of Council and the people of Newcastle, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Mahlaba family and pray that the Almighty grants them strength, comfort and peace during this difficult time. May his legacy continue to guide and inspire generations of public servants and leaders.”
A lasting legacy
The municipality said it joins the people of Newcastle, KZN and South Africa in remembering a leader whose contribution to democratic local government will remain part of the country’s collective heritage.
“May the soul of Dr Mahlaba rest in eternal peace. May perpetual light shine upon him,” the statement concluded.
