Illegal dumping in Estcourt poses a challenge to water pipe repairs

When responding to a burst pipe in Rose Street last Friday, Uthukela District Municipality staff were dismayed to see the condition of the area around the main line.

Illegally dumped building and household waste covered the area that needed excavating.

Glen Singh from the district municipality was in Rose Street on Friday morning and said that staff faces this challenge often in Estcourt.

“People are illegally dumping over our valves, sewer lines and pipes. When there are blockages or burst pipes, we can’t get to the pipes because of the vast amount of dumped material on top of it. This is posing a huge challenge,” he said.

Mr Singh also indicated that problem areas included Protea Road and Colita where manhole covers are buried under dumped waste. He cautions residents against this practice.
