Update: Municipality comments on illegal dumping in Surat Road

"Some residents do not take out their refuse on time and therefore they end up illegally dumping on private property"

The municipality has commented on the issue of illegal dumping in Surat Road.

According to acting communications manager Siyabonga Maphalala, “Refuse is collected every Friday as per the schedule. However, some residents do not take out their refuse on time and therefore they end up illegally dumping on private property.

The municipality has installed a ‘no dumping’ sign in the affected area.

The municipality further conducted an education and awareness campaign in the area.

Our municipal bylaw enforcement officers have been alerted about the matter and have visited the area to monitor the situation.”

Residents feel this is a serious issue, as the illegal dumping and the burning of rubbish poses a health risk for many in the area.

“It’s a health hazard and I’m not sure what we can do,” a concerned resident stated.

Hopefully, the effort the municipality has put in will improve the situation.
