Strike Update: Taps run dry in certain areas of Ladysmith due to striking uThukela workers

The strikers have blocked off the entrance to the uThukela depot in the Pieters Industrial Area

Areas around Ladysmith have been left without water due to the strike by uThukela workers.

Rose Park, Meena Place, Acaciavale and even Colenso have already had their water supply cut off.

Workers in the Water & Sanitation Service of the municipality are striking due to a wage dispute.

The strikers have blocked off the entrance to the uThukela depot in the Pieters Industrial Area.

The workers say they will continue to strike until their demands are met.

uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza confirmed that on Monday, June 25, staff in the Water, Sanitation & Technical Services department initially embarked on a “go slow”, eventually leading to a “down tools” action due to issues relating to overtime and standby payments.

According to Mkhonza, the matter has been resolved by management of the municipality.

All areas that have been affected by this action will have water and sanitation services restored. Some areas that are supplied by the Ezakheni bulk water plant will take a bit longer to recover, owing to the dynamics of the system.

“The district profusely apologises to its customers and the public for the inconvenience caused, thus the swift reaction by uThukela,” says Mkhonza.

If people still have running taps, they are urged to store water.
