Celebrating the role of the youth in society

The theme of the day was "Living the legacy towards a socio-economically empowered youth"

Alfred Duma Local Municipality hosted the 2018 Youth Month celebrations on Friday in the eMachibini area of St Chad’s. A large crowd of young people joined in the celebrations.

The theme of the day was “Living the legacy towards a socio-economically empowered youth”.

As this year marks the centenary of Tata Madiba and Mama Albertina Sisulu, theirs is the legacy referred to.

The event was attended by uThukela District Municipality Mayor Siphiwe Mazibuko, who delivered a message of support. Inkosi Sithole, Alfred Duma Local Municipality Deputy Mayor Thuli Hadebe and other councillors, NYDA Acting Executive Director Mr Siyabonga Mbambo, and representatives from SEDA were also present.

The sector departments gave advice to the students and encouraged them to apply to tertiary institutions, as there are a number of bursaries and other systems used to assist the youth.

Addressing the youth at the event, Alfred Duma Local Municipality Mayor Vincent Madlala said he was grateful for the community having attended the Youth Month celebrations.

In his speech, he reminded the youth about the specialised services that the Youth Development office has in assisting young people when it comes to matters concerning starting businesses or even using the computers for CV compilation and many other important uses.

One of the many things he highlighted was the matter of young people standing up and becoming young entrepreneurs. “We need young people who will have the mentality of being employers and not employees. As the leadership in the communities, we want to see and support youth-owned businesses that help fight the scourge of unemployment,” he said.

Also speaking at the event were representatives from NYDA and other sector departments, highlighting their roles in the community, as well as services available to young people.

The young people at the event were happy with the programme and said they wanted more programmes of this nature that encourage and motivate them to be better people, especially in aspects of being young businessmen and women. Popular maskandi artist Khuzani “Dlamlenze” Mpongose gave a performance on the day, along with other local artists.

Alfred Duma Local Municipality would like to thank all stakeholders who have ensured the realisation of a better society for young people.
