Pensioners stand in long queues during the icy winter to try and get their Sassa payouts

Many of them don't get any help and have to come back the next day in the hopes of getting their money

Pensioners from Ladysmith and surrounding areas have been standing in long queues outside the post office in Murchison Street all week, waiting for their Sassa payouts.

Speaking to some of the pensioners and people who receive social grants, they say they have been coming to town since Monday. Some have been lucky enough to get their money, but not all of them.

Speaking to 85-year-old Lillian Saelembe, she says that Sassa is playing with them. She added that she is from Steadville and came into town at 6am in the freezing cold to get her money.

Some people said they have their new Sassa cards, yet when they went to places where they usually get their money from, they could not get anything.

People from far and wide wake up early on these icy-cold winter mornings and are still waiting at the post office, as it’s a “go slow” due to the long queues.

Many of them don’t get any help and have to come back the next day in the hopes of getting their money.

There is currently a large crowd of people at the post office, hoping for the best in the long queues.
