CRIME: Suspects arrested for drugs and stolen vehicles

According to SAPS, the stolen vehicles have an estimated total value of around R120 000.

Eight suspects were arrested recently on charges of drug possession and possession of stolen vehicles.

According to official sources, these arrests were made during a weekend Intelligence Driven Operation carried out in the oSizweni Policing Area.

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Captain Jabulani Ncube, said the operation was conducted by members of the Newcastle Cluster Team, Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) and the oSizweni Crime Prevention Unit.

“The weekend focused on tip-offs, which informed SAPS of known drug dealers and other criminals in oSizweni and surrounding areas.”

The first arrest was made when SAPS members proceeded to a house in Section B, where they recovered 27 match boxes containing dry-loose dagga.

The team then proceeded to a house in Section F, where one and a quarter Mandrax tablets were recovered.
Ncube said members next went to another house in Section F, where two whole Mandrax tablets, one quarter Mandrax tablet, eight packets of dry-loose dagga and a plastic bag containing dry-loose dagga were recovered.
The operation then moved to a house in Section B.

Thereafter, SAPS recovered two more stolen vehicles. The first was a Mazda sedan, recovered in Section A and reportedly stolen from Vaalbank Farm near Utrecht earlier this month, with the second vehicle, a Ford bakkie, recovered at a house in Fairview, near oSizweni.

According to SAPS, the stolen vehicles have an estimated total value of around R120 000.

Ncube said the operation had produced excellent results, as four suspects, between 26 and 32 years of age, were arrested on drug related charges, and would appear in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court soon for sentencing.

The estimated value of the drugs recovered was estimated to be around R4 000. The other four suspects, who were taken into custody for theft of motor vehicles, will remain at oSizweni SAPS for further questioning.

Once all charges are filed accordingly, they will also appear in the Magistrate’s Court.
