Biker left for dead in Vryheid hit and run survives to tell the tale
"I couldn’t believe that they had just driven off and left me there…”
“Bikers have just as much legal right to be on the road as you do,” says Ndu Mkhize solemnly from the hospital bed where he has spent the last two weeks, incapacitated by a careless motorist on the night of June 28. “Think bike!” he adds. “When you’re on the road, try to consider the fact that you’re not the only person on the road…”
Ndu was the victim of a hit and run while travelling home at 10pm on the night of June 28. As he was turning into his driveway near the Nooitgedacht farm turnoff, he was sideswiped by a silver grey Polo Vivo and left for dead as the driver fled the scene.

With a badly broken leg, Ndu was unable to move from his dangerously precarious position in the middle of the often busy Hlobane road.
“It was such a dark night,” recalls Ndu. “The streetlights don’t work out there and there wasn’t even any moonlight that night. I couldn’t believe that they had just driven off and left me there…”

With only the light from his motorcycle to warn passing motorists of his presence, Ndu’s fate could have been far worse, had a passerby not noticed the injured biker in the road and stopped to assist. Ndu recalls how they called for an ambulance and helped him to safety.
A case has been opened at the Hlobane Police Station.
