Striking uThukela workers shut down municipality and cripple water supply in Ladysmith

People are urged to store water if they still have running taps

All employees at uThukela District Municipality are currently on strike in Ladysmith.

Earlier today (August 3), workers “downed tools” and protested outside the municipal offices.

The workers demanded to see the municipal manager so that their grievances could be heard.

The strikers are demanding that all temporary staff become permanent, and those who are drivers and plumbers get paid correctly according to the pay structure in the municipality.

Many workers say they want their Group Life insurance money to be paid back to them, as they have had deaths in their families and did not receive any money.

They also demand good vehicles to transport staff, as they say that workers cannot sit in vehicles loaded with plumbing tools.

Currently, the Ladysmith Water Works has been shut down, which means that some areas of town, as well as St Chad’s and Roosboom, are without water.

People are urged to store water if they still have running taps.

Water disruptions are likely to continue until the protesters’ demands are met.
