Vryheid’s power outages are a deliberate act of sabotage

Electricians at AbaQulusi Municipality, disgruntled by the current leadership’s refusal to pay out on allegedly fraudulent overtime claims, have resorted to sabotaging the electrical supply to town,

While much of the community found itself powerless as a result of the power outages that plunged various areas of AbaQulusi into darkness, Mayor Jerry Sibiya warns that the reason for the blackouts was nothing less than an act of sabotage.

According to Mayor Sibiya, electricians at AbaQulusi Municipality, disgruntled by the current leadership’s refusal to pay out on allegedly fraudulent overtime claims, have resorted to sabotaging the electrical supply to town, as well as parts of Mondlo, Bhekuzulu and the Kambula region.

“They have gotten away with outrageous claims for overtime for the last eight years,” states the mayor. “There are those who are claiming for overtime while they are on leave or claiming exorbitant amounts for hours that they have not even worked… we cannot allow this to continue. They are not only robbing the municipality, they are robbing the community and taxpayers of AbaQulusi.”

“We would like to extend our sincere apologies to the community for this unnecessary inconvenience,” adds the mayor. “We are working on resolving the issue.”
