UPDATE: Latest cash in transit heist has motorists asking ‘just how safe are we’
The incident has again prompted people travelling on that road on what safety procedures can be put in place to make them feel safer.

The bombing last night of a G4S van, transporting money on the Dundee/Nquthu road, has again brought into the sharp contrast the malaise of cash in transit robberies that have hit South Africa this year.
Similar robberies were reported on the same road about six weeks ago. Last night, armed men travelling in three vehicles – said to be two Hi Luxes and a Audi, opened fire on the van as it crossed the Buffalo River Bridge, travelling towards Dundee shortly after 6.30pm
Once the G4S officers were forced out of the van, the gang members detonated explosives to blow up the armored van. Wads of bank notes – some scorched – were laying all over the scene. The men, who made off in the three vehicles, also loaded up several cash boxes.

Miraculously, no one was injured. The men were said to have driven off on the dirt towards Rorke’s Drift. Alerts were sent out to neighbouring police stations and farmers to block the roads. To date, there have been no arrests although an abandoned vehicle was found near Helpmekaar. It is not clear if the vehicle is linked to the robbery,

Witnesses said the scene resembled ‘a movie’. It is not clear how the armed men got hold of the explosives. It was believed that some undetonated explosive had been left on the scene of the shooting. Spent AK 47, R5 and 9mm cartridges were scattered around the area. The road was closed for some time while forensic police combed the area.
