Tourism educator at KwaNotshelwa High School, Miss Nqobile Makhathini, recently led Arbour Day at the school. This is an environmental initiative which is part of the Tourism subject curriculum under ‘Sustainable and Responsible Tourism’, using the day to promote sustainability and responsible environmental practices among learners.

Learners take action

About 80 Grade 11 pupils took part in the activities, which included tree planting and waste management. The children got their hands dirty and learned about the importance of protecting the environment.

Makhathini said waste management has been a serious challenge at the school, making the initiative an opportunity for learners to take action while promoting hygiene and cleanliness.

Support for the school

Phakamani Gwala from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs supplied the school with 19 plants, as well as gardening equipment to support the initiative.

On Arbour Day, the learners planted 12 of the plants on the school grounds.

Celebrating the importance of trees

The planting was followed by a ceremony where learners shared information about the importance of trees and discussed ways of becoming responsible citizens who care for the environment.

Sithembile Mbatha gave a speech during the ceremony, while Zanomusa Mdluli recited a poem dedicated to Arbour Day.

The initiative gave learners an opportunity to put their classroom knowledge into practice while contributing to a cleaner and healthier school environment.
