Police urge community to break ‘the rape silence’

Another worry is that these cases are being committed by people known to the children,

Dannhauser Police have called on victims of rape to report cases as soon as possible, to help put those responsible behind bars sooner.
This comes after three cases of child rape were reported to the police recently. In the first case, a 10-year-old boy was raped in his home in the Dannhauser area on September 16. The mother of the boy told police that she left the house and when she returned, she found the child crying. He then told her what had happened. Investigations continue.
In the second incident, a 14-year-old girl with special needs was raped during the month of July. The location of the rape has been withheld to protect the identity of the girl. Police have also found out that this is not the first time the girl has been raped. She has also fallen pregnant due to the rape.
In the third incident, a 6-year-old girl was raped by a 30-year-old man who is known to her. The rape happened during the course of the year and the matter is currently under investigation.
The rapes are a huge concern for police, who have called on parents to be more vigilant.
“We as the police are concerned about the incidents and the most worrying fact is that cases are being reported after a period of time, which has a negative impact on investigations and towards the victims,” said Sergeant Mfanafuthi Nyembe, Dannhauser Police Communications Officer.
“Another worry is that these cases are being committed by people known to the children, behind closes doors, so we call on parents to be more vigilant when it comes to their children and ensure they know where they are at all stages,” Sergeant Nyembe added.
He also stressed to parents that there was no waiting period when it came to reporting rape and missing persons cases.
