Thato makes a pitstop in Newcastle before journeying through Africa on foot

On Friday (October 5), Thato was met and welcomed to Newcastle by Newcastle SAPS Acting Station Commander, Colonel Mike Nkosi, who offered him a place to stay for the weekend.

40-year-old social activist, Thato Molosankwe has embarked on an odyssey of sorts, walking from Cape Town to Cairo in a period of 10 years, covering a total distance of 42 177 kilometres in the hopes of ending child and women abuse and social ills in general.

His journey is not just walking the span of Africa however.

His walk started on Mandela Day (July 18) to honour centenarians Mama Albertina Sisulu and Tata Nelson Mandela.

Departing from Cape Town, he went the distance from Bloemfontein into Lesotho and then Newcastle, making a brief stop before continuing on to Piet Retief, crossing the border into eSwatini (formerly Swaziland), Mozambique, Zimbabwe and beyond.

During his visit, he also met members of the Chinese Community Policing Forum, who donated R8 500 to the Thato Molosankwe Charity Foundation, an organisation raising funds through a Back-a-Buddy account which to date stands at just under R80 000.

“I really enjoyed my stay in Newcastle and the people I met were so friendly and welcoming. They took the time to listen to my story and to support me as I take on this mission to make our country a better place for all who live in it.”
