Guard, farmer shot in yet another cash heist ambush on Vryheid road
Similar heists were reported on the Nquthu and Pomeroy roads in September.
The farmer, who was shot while in pursuit of the armed robbers involved in yesterday’s cash in transit heist near Vryheid , was admitted to a local hospital where he is said to be in a stable condition.
Martin Dedekind, a farmer in the Piet Retief area, had attempted to try and bring the perpetrators to justice, the Vryheid Herald reported.
His attempted were thwarted when he attempted to stop one of the two vehicles being used by the robbers before they could proceed along the bridge just before Commondale near Piet Retief.
The gunmen in a second vehicle came up behind Mr Dedekind and opened fire, with one of the bullets penetrating Mr Dedekind’s stomach.
A G4S security guard was rushed to Vryheid Hospital after being shot in the head during the cash in transit heist that took place at the Tea Cup near Scheepers Nek at about 7pm on Monday.
The driver of the G4S van is still nowhere to be found after he apparently fled on foot.
Initial reports from the scene indicate that the G4S vehicle was forced to a stop at gunpoint when it slowed down over the speed bumps in front of the Tea Cup
Explosives were used to gain access to the cash on board but police are still uncertain how much of the cash the robbers actually got away with but it was said no cash was recovered.

G4S manager, Craig Willoughby said he was not allowed to comment about what had happened.
Neighbourhood Watch groups are on the lookout for a Ford Focus that was hijacked from Stilwater area, believed to be the getaway vehicle.
Two BMWs and a hijacked Ford Focus with a NTU were used in the heist. A BMW and the Ford were later found abandoned. Various neighourhood watch emergency groups were asked to be on the alert including the NDE 911 Group.
