Free parking days are over
Free parking days are soon to be over following the recent appointment of a parking meter service provider.

Motorists should stock up on silver coins. They are going to need them to feed the parking meters soon to be installed in and around the Central Business District.
Dr Dumisani Thabethe, municipal Head of Communications has confirmed the intention of the municipality to have the parking meter system up and running before the start of the festive season, provided delays in the appointment of parking attendants are addressed.
The traffic attendants will man the meters to ensure motorist compliance, he said.
Chris le Roux, speaking on behalf of the Newcastle Ratepayers Association, believes the metered parking system is a serious matter and should be expedited by the municipality.
Although he acknowledged he had not examined all the details thoroughly, he was of the opinion the parking system would address complaints from motorists over the lack of available parking.
“If well managed, the system will earn much needed revenue for the municipality.”
Mayor explains:
- In March, during a press briefing at the municipal building, Mayor Makhosini Nkosi revealed the procurement of new parking meters was almost finalised. He called the lack of meters to date an embarrassment.
- A service provider, Traffic Management Services was identified in May and the provider submitted an implementation plan.
- Officials submitted the Parking Meter Bylaws to government to be gazetted.
- The employment of meter attendants and designation of traffic officials is currently in the process of being finalised.
