The dusty Marikana roads lead to nowhere

The roads are not the only problem in the area - leaking sewerage pipes are also a problem for most households.

Residents in Marikana location in Sithembile have been feeling neglected when it comes to service delivery. The dusty, potholed roads are not only damaging residents’ cars but ambulance services also cannot enter the area. The situation becomes worse when it rains as it becomes difficult for residents to drive.

This is just one of the roads that are in dire state.

“Last March we held a demonstration march when our Ward councillor was still S Zitha. Former Mayor Mbatha promised to fix our roads and he had said that the money has been approved, but up until today nothing has materialised,” said McGyver Pillay, the Head of SANCO and a resident in Marikana.

“Our concerns as residents of Sithembile are falling on deaf ears and we are tired of empty promises. It would have been better if no promises were made. We have spoken to Cllr Thabani Mlotshwa and the former Mayor about this and the sad part is that our kids are growing up in this mess. If we don’t fight this battle for them who will?” said Muzivukile Mhlungu, another resident in Marikana.
The roads are not the only problem in the area – leaking sewerage pipes are also a problem for most households. McGyver also mentioned that because of the roads the SAPS can’t patrol. Lwazi Cindi, Technical Services Manager, told the Courier that the budget to improve the roads had been approved but repairs would only start early next year.
