Men linked to farm attack expected to appear in Court tomorrow

A massive hot pursuit operation swung into action involving local farmers, security officials and SAPS from various stations.

Four men linked to the attack on St George’s farm, on the Ngisane Road,  on Tuesday afternoon are expected to appear in the Glencoe Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

The suspects, who were apprehended in Dannhauser, not long after the attack that led to the shooting and wounding of Corrie Janse van Rensburg (55), are at an identity parade today.

Mrs Janse van Rensburg’s nephew was tied up with cable ties and shot at although the firearm failed to go off – the gunman, however, did cock his firearm again and the live round that dislodged was still on the ground when help arrived,  security officials told the Courier.

Mrs Janse van Rensburg was shot in the leg but fortunately suffered only a flesh wound and was rushed to a local medical centre where she was treated and discharged.

Her brother, Johan Ferreira, his son and two workers, came under fire when they rushed to the scene to assist after the alert had been sent out.  Mr Ferreira’s bakkie was hit several times and those on the scene said it was ”a miracle that no one was shot’.

Colonel Thembeka Mbele, SAPS spokesperson, said the four men, who were heavily armed with automatic rifles, sped off in a Toyota bakkie but it is thought they later changed vehicles. A massive hot pursuit operation swung into action involving local farmers, security officials and SAPS from various stations.

This led to the men being apprehended in the Dannhauser policing area. A cellphone stolen in the robbery was picked up by a passerby on Victoria Street and later taken to the police station.

“Th suspects will be charged for robbery, attempted murder as well as possession of unlicensed firearm,” Colonel Mbele told the Courier.
