Newcastle SAPS Anglers reel in the awards at national competition

The KwaZulu-Natal teams did not disappoint and at the end of the competition the KZN B Team finished 10th.

The Newcastle SAPS, along with SAPS members from all over the country, celebrated the end of a successful angling season in style.

The competition, which was held on November 6, had 150 anglers competing for the biggest catch while making a difference in our community.

“We are not only competing for trophies today, but we are standing together to launch a successful social development programme and make a real difference,” explained Captain Madela of the Normandien SAPS at the gala evening.

The National Championships gave the SAPS anglers the opportunity to take part in the ‘adopt a family’ project where food and funds were donated to the some destitute families in and around Newcastle.

After a weekend of hard fishing and fun around 2 800 fish were caught which weighed in at a hefty total of 1 564 kilograms.

The KwaZulu-Natal teams did not disappoint and at the end of the competition the KZN B Team finished 10th.

They caught 113 fish weighing in at 67kg. KZN A Team took the fifth spot on the podium with 290 fish weighing in at 185kg.

Tournament officials:

CJ Heymans (Gold), PJ Rudolph (Silver), J Botha (Silver), CH Heymans (Silver) and BA Robertson(Silver).

A total of 2083 fish, weighing in at 1564 kilograms, were caught over three days.

Heaviest species winners:

  • GM Sono from the Head Office team won bronze for catching a 2kg Catfish
  • DJ Grobler (Gauteng team) won bronze for catching a 1kg Yellowfish
  • C van Greunen (Head Office) won bronze for a 4kg Carp
  • MJ Bornman (Head Office) took bronze for a Scally
  • BP de Villiers (Western Cape) won bronze for a 1kg Bream
  • AJG Jonker (Northwest) also won bronze for a ‘moddervis’

Individual prices:

A Brooks walked away with the Heaviest Bag after the three day tournament, winning silver for 52kgs worth of fish.

WJH Fouche caught the most fish over the weekend with 54 fish.
