The biggest with approximately 2000 staff are situated in Italy, where Dr Rembges is based. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) has a total staff of 3000 members out of which 83% of the core research staff are doctorate holders. 75% of the staff are scientists and researchers. Her first visit to Africa, she was not only interested in the landscape and wildlife but also in getting to know the local people.
Warmly welcomed by the staff and Principal of Sarel Cilliers High School, Dr Rembges was able to spend several mornings at the school, getting to know the staff and leaners. One of the highlights of her visit was the performance of Mr Dube’s Choir who sang several songs in Zulu. Their rendition will be remembered Dr Rembges for many, many years; she was very touched by the student’s willingness to perform, with many of the choir members coming to school between exams especially.
Dr Rembges was very impressed by the friendliness and openness of the students and staff, who were all very interested in interacting with someone from a foreign country. The students were very proud of their Zulu heritage and their school.
